How to use the GST Calculator NZ
This GST Calculator NZ uses New Zealand’s standard GST rate of 15%. GST is generally added to the price of most goods and services supplied by GST-registered businesses.
Use Add GST when you have a GST-exclusive amount and want to calculate the GST-inclusive total. Use Remove GST when the amount already includes GST and you want to identify the GST-exclusive value.
Adding 15% GST
Total = amount × 1.15
Removing GST
GST = total × 3 ÷ 23
Important: To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price, do not simply subtract 15%. Divide the GST-inclusive amount by 1.15.

Frequently asked questions
What is the GST rate in New Zealand?
New Zealand’s standard GST rate is 15%. However, some supplies may be zero-rated or exempt, and special rules can apply to particular transactions.
How do I add GST to a price?
Multiply the GST-exclusive price by 1.15. For example, $200 excluding GST becomes $230 including GST.
How do I remove GST from a total?
Divide the GST-inclusive total by 1.15. For example, $230 divided by 1.15 gives a GST-exclusive amount of $200.
Why can’t I subtract 15% to remove GST?
The 15% GST was calculated on the original GST-exclusive amount, not on the larger GST-inclusive total. This is why the correct method is to divide the inclusive price by 1.15.
Does this calculator prepare my GST return?
No. It calculates GST for individual amounts using the standard 15% rate. It does not determine whether a transaction should be included in a GST return or whether you can claim the GST paid.
